VAC was...

... developed in 1971 as a project of the Junior League of Scranton.  The Voluntary Action Center was originally established to assess the need for, develop, and promote the local growth of volunteerism.  In addition to its obligations to volunteerism, the Voluntary Action Center has pledged itself to adapt to the realities, challenges, and demands of the changing times. Today, the Voluntary Action Center has matured into a multi-purpose organization that is responsible for the development and administration of numerous information and referral, intervention, mutual help, and substance prevention programs.

As a member of the United Way of Lackawanna County, The Voluntary Action Center was built on, and continues to stand on,  the following goals:

  • To encourage the local spirit of volunteerism by identifying community needs for volunteers, and offering recruitment, placement, and recognition services.
  • To strengthen regional information and referral sources.
  • To expand the local growth of mutual help.
  • To explore the prospects of new human service projects in efforts to meet increased community needs.
